I started working for Tesco thinking this is just a temp job but pays alright. Having done 4 years I am now finally swapping it all for a low paid job farming in Italy.
I am now going to offload 4 years of pain onto you all so if your into moaning feel free to read on:
1. I think the comapany is run by a bunch of monkeys who are just good at spinning PR.
2. They have fucked my wage up for the last time, how hard can it be to look at someone's hours and give them the money they are owed. Once they have paid everyone they owe I bet the annual profit will drop from 4.7billion to 3billion.
3. Stock CONTROL? is that just a coin they flip, heads we send it tails we dont & a dice to get the amount to send.
4. I now hate the general public and would happily sign up to al-quida and kill the lot of them.
5. How few staff do you need to run a store? this is the question not how can we make our store a better shopping experience. Suprised they haven't looked into drugging the staff with performance enhancers to fill the shelves better, surgery to make the staff smile all the time.
6. It would be nice to actually have another answer then "We just have to cope with what we got" once in a while.
7. You know when you go to a packed pub and ask for a pint, when they answer sorry we ran out of glasses you ok with two halfs instead. Are you ok or do you just leave aand go to the pub down the road with more staff.
8. FACE THIS UP YOU TOSSER, this is what I used to think but now say.
9. Health and Safety!!!! Ever tried to do everything by the book for a night I did, lol. Dragged one cage at a time, use the kneeling mat for everything on the bottom shelf and stool for everything on the top.

I left Tesco on Friday. The feeling of relief can't be matched, it's amazing. No more hearing the checkout beep in my sleep. No more shitty customers yelling because you don't pack their bags correctly (do it your fucking self, then, my shoulders hurt from heaving your fucking beer). No more insane colleagues.

And true to form, they got it all a bit wrong. I handed in my notice as soon as I was offered my new job, clearly specifying my leaving date as June 22nd. The week before last I had 2 days' holiday to take, and when I came back from that everyone was surprised as they thought I'd already gone. My last shift was 4.30-8.15pm and it was quiet, not much happening. It was approaching 7pm and I enquired about an exit interview, details of my P45 etc... nothing. No-one had got their shit together to organise any of this.

They finally cobbled some shit together by about 7.45pm. As I never got a staff handbook, offer letter or anything when I started, I didn't know about references or anything and they gave me a funny look when I asked.

In short? I am well shot of Tesco. Kept my shirt to use as a duster, left that bloody awful skirt on the locker room floor.

I currently work on checkouts in the Mold store in North wales and as of July, I'm getting a transfer to a Liverpool store.

I know how it all works and such things like that, but I need some advice, help, whatever it's called, Basically, do anyone of you work or know anyone that works in the following stores:

LIVERPOOL METRO
BROWNLOW HILL LIVERPOOL EXPRESS
AIGBURTH

I have to choose three and the above are the closet to my new home. I don't personally want to continue working for Tesco whilst in University, but I spoke to my personal manager and she said it was better for me to do this so I can keep my Shares and Discount.

So in conclusion will I like it? ha ha.

Hey people,

I am now no longer a Tesco employee so this will be my last entry here. I am genuinely sad to leave the company becasue i still believe i wud have made a fantastic manager. My managers were genuinely sorry to see me go. It was the deputy manager and PM that would not allow me to progress. My section manager said to my mum today that i wasnt gonna go anywhere as long as i stayed in that store. My store is one of those that it riddled by nepotism and you only get anywhere if ya face fits. I may still rejoin Tesco in london even try for the graduate scheme again if things dont work out in my new job. I have invaluable 9 years experience on every dept there so i cant see why i cant try again in a london store in the future. My section manager believes i will be back because i have some unfinished business in that i should have been made a manager. Id love to come back as a store manager or area manager because i believe i have what it takes to go far. In my life i have always had the ability to prove people wrong its partly due to my never say die attitude and work ethic. I had my ecit interview with this deputy dick and told him honestly why i was leaving. I said it was because i felt my promotion was blocked. I also told him how he can improve the morale at the store which is rock bottom. Even experienced staff like myself are leaving. I said in friendly terms that u have to be more positive with ya staff, take accountability for the staffs progression. Dont be negative with them, encourage them offer them incentives and never fall back on promises made to them. I have been signed on the options scheme for 2 years without ever going to a workshop so i said you always have to provide staff with light at the end of the tunnel. Its common sense you cant expect the employee to do it all for themsleves they need a leg up along the way.

I am riding into the sunset or technically speaking sunrise as im moving east from swansea to london but like i said in my resignation letter (which BTW was the best one my section manager ever had) i am proud to have worked for the company and will look back at my time there with fond memories. A lot of the managers were shocked when i told them i was a manager for world duty free in heathrow with BAA. Ive almost tripled my salary and gone from a GA to a manager. I think it shocked my PM too cuz she had always held me back. Im glad to get out of that store cuz if i had stayed there i wud have been picking up my pension from it!

Thankyou for all your support etc and i sincerely hope that this does not happen to many more people.

Hey guys/gals,

Im finally leaving Tesco! Woo hoo! I have been with the company 9 years and have worked on every department an held Team leadership for a few years so that is my highest position. The reason I am leaving is basically due to lack of development. I have been offered a job as replenishment manager at world duty free in Heathrow airport. Il be getting twice the money I earn now and it has better prospects for promotion. BAA have a fantastic policy when it comes to managing their staff and thats why I want to work for them. I went to a Tesco graduate assessment centre 2 years ago and failed, only because I had no preparation from my PM. However the feedback that I got from that enabled me to get this new job because in those 2 years ive studied what makes a great manager, doing all the research and applying in my role as a team leader and seen it work. Despite that, my store still didnt allow me to progress so I think its time to move on. BAA ensure the management treat their staff fairly, its one of their policies and their selection criteria is tougher than Tescos. MY Tesco store would be great if the management was led by fair senior management, but in truth they are led by a deputy dick who really should not be in his job. Hes the nasty hitler type who never praises people and unfortunately his attitude is passed down to his section managers. He is the guy who has basically been blocking my promotion as it is up to him to decide whether or not my behaviour is suitable to be sent on to the grad scheme again which i think is rediculous considering his behaviour!!

Its sad to leave the comapny as i really do like working for Tesco, but in order to achieve my ambitions in life i have no choice but to leave. I have fond memories working at my 2 stores and the experience has helped me to gain this new position so i wont be negative about the company.

Just out of curiosity is there anyone else on here that has experienced similar problems that I have endured? Promoion blocking etc? Also, what happens in your exit interview? Are people polite or do they get nasty and tell the management here to stick it?

Thanks in advance

Debut? [11 Sep 2006|06:24pm]

I started working for a tesco store in Northern Ireland in May of this year. In july I applied for a transfer, on the opening date of 24th! I have since heard NOTHING back! I am now getting very worried that when I go to uni next week in Lancaster I will not have a job, and therefore be an even more poor student than first anticipated!

I have tried to call local stores, but people are on holidays and no one seems to care! I had the number for the debut club but I lost it....now the debut website is being fixed, and i cannot get in contact with them at all....

I am so very fustrated with talking to answering machines, and getting no response whatsoever!

My personnal manager says she cannot do any more for me, and that I am to go and camp in a store until I get a job!!!

Has anyone else had problems with debut, or is it just me? Also.....does anyone have the debut club number??

hello, my name is sam, i have been working the checkouts at martlesham for eleven months now, and i just joined because i have a slight dilemma.
i bought tickets for the reading festival in june, and handed in my holiday application at tesco promptly after. it was refused. "too busy". i asked what i was supposed to do, and basically, over the period of many shifts, was told completely different courses of action to take by each manager, which i followed through (writing letters to declare i couldn't be in work, getting shift swaps which then fell through for time differences etc etc), and then was told these incorrect and i infact had to go about things another way. (aka tonnes of time wasting due to the incompetence of the managing staff, thanks) i've now been told that i can get someone to just cover the shifts - a shift swap for the time being, is apparently not needed. i've put a polite note in the overtime folder for everyone yet this has provoked no response, all of my friends at work are unable to cover the shift and the old people are just downright scary, SO:

as i am unable to work the shift (a thursday, 4:30-10:30pm), do i phone in earlier and tell them, give notice, or what? what are the likely repercussions of not working a shift that they have known full well i will not be able to do for many months, will i be fired? i'm not very good with confrontations and i don't really want to lose my job... so i don't know. sorry that i've been a bit rambly it's just really frustrating!! and not going to the festival is not an option haha.

hope you can be of help as no one in my section is!

and also, (sorry) my next shift is contracted straight after i receive my as level results... could be interesting.

thanks for your time :)

My store tesco swansea 3219 is the worst in the company for sick and the senior management are scratching their heads!!! I wonder why! Our staff turnover is rediculous and they are wondering why ha ha. What this company needs is managers that are compassionate about their staff more than the profits. Its the staff that will make you the profit - without them the business wont be successful, period.

Hey folks,

Am i the only one here that has experienced promotion blocking in Tesco? I failed the grad assessment centre 2 years ago and ever since they have been blocking promotion. I have signed on to the instore options scheme but have not attended any workshops yet. I wrote a letter to my general manager and PM but nothing has been done. A girl who signed on after me has now completed 30 workshops and is now a manager in a cardiff store. I work in Swansea Extra 3219 where nepotism rules!

Im now going to leave but if i were to do take them to court for constructive dismissal id have a good case but it wouldnt be wise because of the repurcussions on my career. Despite that i am suing them for an injury in work ha ha!

Id welcome any advice, thanks in advance.

Well, i'm back here, and back working for Tesco -_-
Some of you may remember (i swear to god everyone in store does) i left tesco at the start of 2005 and strutted off in a bout of smoke and fire. I had been made to remove my (already minimal) piercings, and then, i started to wear a wig to work. No one said anything until one of the people i worked with saw me out of the store, without my wig on, and with pink hair XD Needless to say, i was told i wasn't allowed to wear a wig to work, and i was "forced to resign" for having pink hair. Feeling pretty bitter by this point, as i had already had problems with some of the employees i worked with before the hair thing (yeah, there was some nastyness where i was working, the Cafe, i know OUCH CAFE BLOWS. And Tesco did NOTHING to help.) So, when i watched the evening news and saw how one guy was being bitched at by Stansted Airport for having too much gel in his hair, i called in, and ended up being on TV for being let go for wearing a wig. Ahaaa, it was amusing. There was something on the radio about it too and a shitload of people called in saying it was dumb that i wasn't allowed to have my hair how i liked.
ANYWAY. My point is - i'm back at Tesco. Andthere is this whole "hostile air" towards me since i came back XD The irony of it is, they have shoved me on customer services. Sometimes i get to go on Kiosk, which isn't too bad, but jesus do i hate customer services x_x
Do any other females with tattoos on here have to cover them for work? Because i do! 0_o I have one on my inner forarm, it's not huge, it's not excessive, but i have to cover it -_-
Bleh, i'm going to go back to trying not to think aboutthe nasty sinking feeling i have in my chest about tomorrows shift now XD I badly want to be switched permenantly to kiosk and photo's, but i doubt they'll let me do that, even though i am the worlds most retarded customer service employee. Aha XD
GO TESCO MARTLESHAM.

Please excuse my extreme amounts of 'french' in this post, but I'm fucking outraged.

My last shift was tuesday (day before last) and I was on the kiosk with the usual lass who was on (also named Teri like moi) And APPRENTLY on this day 500 pound went from the til. So yesterday (my day off) Teri was in, she got called the office and told it was 500 down and she thought it was going to be the usual refresher talk they give....But no, instead they have an 'informal chat' and fucking SUSPEND HER. They also ESCORTED her off the premises.

Not knowing any of this I went in to my usual 9-6 shift today, at 4pm Teri came in for a second meeting, as earlier on today she got a phone call saying THE MONEY WASN'T ACTUALLY MISSING IT WAS A MISCOUNT.
She also informed me of all of this when she came in and also that they were planning to SUSPEND ME at the end of my 6 o clock shift this evening.
I was apparently not to know any of this.
So Teri got a further rollocking for informing me.

So she goes into her meeting and they tell her she can return to work,
she got no apology NOTHING, all because the cash office are fucking incompetant, they should fucking suspend them for being so fucking wrong.

I think it is completely outragous that they can just randomly suspend someone without further checks being carried out first and no proof of anything. ARGH.
